| Me and grimeth started playing Path of Exile. We're not too far. If anyone wants to join us, feel free to. It's a diablo 2-esque game. | |

I'm... Actually OK-ish with micro-transactions... As long as it's not straight-out buying power (Diablo III style)... Suit/weapon-skins are all good, hell even bonus content is fine- so long as it's not something related to the main story... Bonus content can come in the form of extra levels, challenges (co-op survival maps and such), extra voice-overs (so long as they don't try to sell you the "default" voicing for non-English versions)... A good example of micro-transactions done right is the DotA 2 Store. As long as you can't buy gear that's leaps and bounds better than any of the gear available in the "vanilla", it's fine. Boosters are OK, but only barely. And in a scavenging/survival game like DS3, I don't really see a logical implementation. Unless they strictly fuck players over and screw the looting balance in-game so that you actually need to pay to get anywhere (a'la SOE's Bullet Run)... Pre-order items that are better than starting gear are OK still, but only if they're made available once you've either beaten the game or at least found/scavenged/made the weapon they're based off (or you've passed a certain point in-game)... What I don't like to hear is exactly this shit- "Oh, we're doing it because some of our supposed fans, who play on smartphones and handhelds, are used to it." Fuck you. No. You do not enter to make (or play) a largely single-player game with the clear idea to have an in-game shop where people would be able to buy the rest of the content, or content that effectively changes your experience insofar as to render it a necessity (DLC, legitimate DLC, notwithstanding). Smartphone and handheld apps have this "feature" (and I'm using the term loosely) because more times than not, it's a really small team working on the title, which is only willing to develop their software if they see it's getting a positive response from consumers. The usual business model is "release a base platform now, see how it fends for itself and if it does OK, get the rest done". That and smartphones and handhelds have a limited storage capacity. Yes, it's "large", with currently 64GB being the biggest variants (that I know of), and that's handhelds (iPads and the like). Most people don't own a 32GB iPhone, or Galaxy SIII. But not all that space will be devoted to apps. Currently, of the 32GB MicroSD card on my Galaxy, about 20GB is in music... And then there's the argument of "Why?" Why should I buy stuff that would make me absolutely overpowered at such an early stage of your game that most of the actual completion incentive is gone. Why would I want to spoil the fun of an actually challenging game? That's actually the problem here, isn't it? The "different generation" bit is the key, as it seems... We've grown... bored of truly "hard" games. God (yes, I said it) forbid there be a game where the levels aren't riddled with healthpacks and checkpoints, we might find it too damn hard and cry ourselves to sleep! But I'm flying off-tangent here... OK, so there's the counter to the "Why?"- And it's a fairly overused one, "It's your choice to use that feature". Well, fuck no if you're intentionally messing with the damn game so that I have to use it in order to progress... OK. Have your boosters and weapons that shoot flaming-toxic-electrified plasma beams. But don't make the game so bogged-down and looting unbalanced that I need to rely on your shop for gear that I should be getting in-game. /rant | |
