| Well, it appears the industry is taking a new trend... I guess everybody's trying to copy-off Minecraft's success or something... I mean- even big-ass studios like Ubisoft have gone to the market with their sandbox 'You are God, here's a shovel now build us mortals beach houses!' title ('From Dust' if you haven't been following). So my question is- What seems to be the fuss about all powerful, snake-like creatures that are capable of moving mountains and creating worlds (kinda comes with the 'all powerful' gimmick but had to be said) for lesser beings their elevated and all-knowing mind logically shouldn't care less?
I mean- think about it. If you were some all-powerful (snake-like) creature, capable of forming planets and stars and galaxies, why should you care about the survival of... well... Creatures that are less than you and would never be able to become like you (all-powerful and snake-like). Ok, my atheist theory aside...
I first thought it's a neat trend in indie studios but now a big fish is putting up its stall in the market (namely Ubisoft, if you haven't been following) I gotta wonder- why? I mean- the obvious reasons aside (it being fun to sprout-up volcanoes in the middle of villages and watching people die; it being fulfilling building a giant 2D tree house with you friends; etc.)... Are we so desperate of proving that a God (or an all-powerful snake-like being), given a human heart (i.e- the player), is capable of caring for the lives of creatures which, in his eyes, are what single-celled organisms are for us?
Anyways... /rantover /discuss

It's the same general principle- you can mold the world around you into whatever you want (yes, including giant magma-spewing genitalia)...

Second Life is different, darlin'... We're talking about 'You are our God, here's a shopping list and a toolbox- now get to work!'-type games... I know Minecraft's not the first one (the oldest one I remember is Black & White) but it's the one that really started things going...

I know Minecraft's not the first one (the oldest one I remember is Black & White) but it's the one that really started things going... Second life allows you to create objects like minecraft but with more freedom because you aren't limited to blocks or cubes.

Really? Then I do stand corrected, sir... *Extinguishes cigar. Gets coat a hat from hanger. Goes out the door.* So OK, add Second Life to that list... Not that we need another example... And Minecraft did start the trend... I don't remember everybody starting to churn-up fancy, sandbox, all-powerful-snake-like-being-involving games after Second Life...

| From Dust and Sims aren't really the same emergent genre. It's really an emergent genre themed around survival and crafting. Sure, the building stuff side is also popular, but really there are hundreds of games with map editors. That isn't really a genre in and of itself. Herp derp, I can make a spaceship in HALO: Reach and Minecraft is a clone of that.
Yes, Minecraft is a clone game, but it sure isn't a clone of Sims.
