It's depressing to see how inactive it has been recently. I mean, everybody is pretty much primarily posting in the never ending thread now and there's not enough people here to make this place really booming. We need to find some way to bring more people here before this place just fades into nothingness...
I know for a fact that a lot of boards out there are thriving because of how many people are there. We just need to get back into the game and pull people here. However, where we obtain these people might matter, because we don't to end up pulling in douches like those at Selkath.
I understand that people are busy these days, but it doesn't seem like they're rarely at their computer anymore. I know most of you are still dicking around with your computer. I don't know how we …

Personality: Has an abrasive personality and a sarcastic sense of humor. Can be quick to anger in certain situations. Despite his abrasiveness, he can be friendly. Is hedonistic, but not so much to an extreme degree.
Bio: Born into a family of the lower class (and an abusive family at that) on Earth, Rafael had grown up through a hard life, resorting to petty thievery and crimes just to scrape by in life. His parents had foolishly been involved with many criminal organizations and whenever they screwed up, they took it out on Rafael. One day, his parents screwed up big time and the criminal organization that they pissed off happened to be one of the most powerful organizations, known as Trinity. His parents were killed because of their greed. Or so he thought. Truthfully, he never truly knew them.
Through the years of running with gangs and participating in fight clubs, he had picked up quite a few skills. He picked up his skills with explosives through a military-type gang who had worked with breaking into vaults, shutting down big businesses, and even taking out a corporate leader. He also once ran with a mafia type gang that helped him gain his interrogative skills. His techniques were brutal and well-feared.
Over the years before his parent's deaths, Rafael still retained a relatively good attitude despite his upbringing, for he had made many friends through the gangs he worked with. That and his wonderful sex life. He had also made quite a name for himself in the underworld, his renowned wild and unpredictable fighting skills had also played a part in his popularity with the police which attracted the attention of a man named Ban-Anad D'ealari, who had captained a ship named Sleight of Hand. Ban had approached Rafael and offered him a chance to join his crew on his ship. Wanting a bit of adventure outside the life of crime, he accepted his offer.
After spending several years serving on the Sleight of Hand, 24 year old Rafael had received a message from someone back on Earth who was a director a program called Project Olympus. Rafael brought the message to Ban, who had become the father figure he always wanted but never had and said the message consisted of him being special and hand picked to participate in a special program with extensive combat training and "special" training. It was very vague on specifics, but Rafael felt that he should become a part of this program. Ban's history with the program had made him very weary about this decision of Raf's, but he ultimately let him go to do it. Rafael had returned to Earth after saying his goodbyes and was about to begin his new life.

Bio:
Not much is know about Tasu Venkamas' early life. Born on Chevron V, a colony world populated mostly by Indonesians, his parents were farmers. His father was an ex-space marine from Earth, while his mother was native to the Cheveron V colony. His father fought in the Nexus War and was a decorated veteran.
Interestingly enough Tasu Venkamas' grandfather was the well renown military scientist, James Morak. Morak is most well known for his part in the creation of the Gate Canon and the destruction of the Telkos system. The Gate canon is one of the most powerful weapons known to exist to date (tho an inadvertent one at that). With the utilization of the ancient gate on Feldon Prime, Morak and his team found a way to reverse trajectory the slip space gate causing a massive outburst of energy onto the targeted system of entry. It is unknown why the Telkos system was targeted specifically, but it was a well populated system. It is also unknown if Morak knew the effects the gate would have if given such practical use. However, the gate was not designed for the purpose of dispersing so much energy and in the end suffered a massive meltdown.
The destruction of the Telkos system and massive damage of Feldon Prime were major turning points in the Nexus War. Tasu Venkamas enlisted in the Terran Systems Alliance (TSA) space marine core at the age of 17. After 2 years of service Tasu was selected for higher education and intensive training upon review of his intelligence stats. After 4 years of academy training Tasu emerged as an elite sniper and linguist. He was put into the 112th Recon division of the Space Marines. He was tagged with medals multiple times for precision kills on known terrorists and enemy's of the TSA.
After a traumatic incident with Kajan rebels on Arkos, Tasu was reassigned from being a recon scout sniper to an agent in the field. As an agent Tasu was inserted directly behind enemy lines and terrorist organisations to cause collateral damage and gather intel. At the age of 28 Tasu was selected for Project Olympus. He underwent the experimental surgical implants and cybernetics the brightest minds of the United Systems Alliance had to offer. When they were finished he was an agent of war.

Personality: Violent and quick tempered Nyx often lashes out at the smallest things that irritate her. There are only a few living people she trusts. Outwardly she is confident and often dark. However, her squadmates know her on another level. In truth Nyx is unstable and emotionally crippled. On the inside she is often depressed and sad.
Bio: Charlotte Corday was born in Les Mureaux, France on Earth. Her parents were simple civilians that owned a local convenience store. Sadly when she was about 6, local thugs assaulted the store killing both of her parents and decimating the store. Young and alone with no other relatives Charlotte was forced to the streets. Life was hard and it was a struggle just to get from day to day without getting harassed by local gangs. Eventually she joined up with a small group of other street orphans. Over the years new members became a part of the group... others would die. By the time Charlotte was 11 she was the oldest one left in the group.
Living on the streets had honed a primal instinct in her... and remarkable athleticism. Something any street orphan needed to live long. However sometimes even that wasn't enough. At the age of 13 her group was trapped by a local gang. The children were turned to slaves and entertainment. Charlotte was raped and abused until she finally cracked. With the gang members drunk and incapacitated she went on a mad blood lusting rampage. When the sun rose the next morning there was no life left in the hideout... not even her friends from the street. Covered in blood and sweat authorities picked her off the street wandering aimlessly.

Ban-Anad does not wear much in the way of armor, his sole physical protection being a simple Kevlar polymer vest reinforced with armored plates over a white shirt. He does however tend to sport a long, brown trench coat with a special weave of a duralloy made of Tantalum, Niobium and several other highly-resistant substances, making it resistant to a direct shot of nearly anything short of an RPG. Be careful of his favorite hat, there's not just one rabbit hidden in there..
Personality: - Prefers to avoid a fight unless necessary. Would much rather talk himself out of trouble than draw a weapon, or attention. - At times dark and moody due to past troubles; at other times light and cheerful. - Good, albeit sometimes misplaced, sense of humor. - A driving sense of justice and honor. - A natural, albeit reluctant, leader. Takes the post of command with ease and experience, though only when drawn by necessity. - May behave inappropriately at times. This behavior is most always a facade behind which stands determination and tact.
Flaws/Weaknesses: - Current criminal records and status as a deserter have left him banned and wanted on many spaceports. Contacting him personally can prove hard, even with Oponn's help. - Many enemies in the underground, especially former members of 'Trinity'. - Attachment to former Delta Unit members can leave him emotionally exposed. Though he hides it well. - Has an unbroken record of visits to the 'Mars Colony Memorial Hospital' where his mother currently works and Karaxt Brinn and Oeber Skintt are being kept.
Bio: Born in 2238 on the 'New Chicago' Station, Jupiter Sector. Third son of Martha and James D'ealari. His father was a policing enforcer on the station, his mother- a medical officer. Raised in Jupiter Sector, he learned of the hardships of life the hard way- his father was killed when he was ten, during a hostage situation led by the sector terrorist organization 'Trinity'. He swore on his fathers' capsule that he would follow in his footsteps and try to bring justice to all who seek to avert it. At the age of 25, that inadvertently took him to the UNMC (United Nations Marine Corps) recruiting office. Already specializing in small-arms and side-arms and having basic military training (having served as a police enforcer himself), he was quickly accepted and put in command of a special forces squad in the 92-nd Marine Division, stationed on Mars Colony. There he and his squad were crucial in quelling the 2266 Mars Rebellion, earning him a 'Medal of Honor'- still one of the highest awards due a soldier. After some time spent tracking down insurgency movements in the far colonies, he was transferred to the newly formed Project Olympus where he led the training of one of the first four squads of the program. During their first deployment on the outskirts of Rio, it was decided for the initial program's methods to be revisited and started from scratch. The cause of this was the inexplicable drop of the other three units, which had all exhibited prior mental instabilities (all recorded as 'within expected parameters') and their going rogue. All connection with the initial units was immediately cut off, their AIs getting purged. While not one of the three 'bad' units, Delta too experienced the full force of that action, causing the death of one member- Zindo Friz, the drop into borderline dementia of one Karaxt Brinn, making her her a permanent patient in a military mental institution; and the vegetative state of one Oeber Skintt. This turn of events led to Ban-Anad's own fall off and desertion from Olympus and the Military as a whole. An event remembered by the maneuver he pulled, now colloquially called "A D'ealari" (Also the name of a very explosive cocktail).

Personality: Has a desire to quickly get through things. Dislikes incompetence. Harsh and dark sense of humor. Goes into a deep depression when he feels he failed at something. Strongly Patriotic and willing to give his life for his cause.
Bio: Javus was born to a ranching family in Montana where he grew up being taught of his country's past and accomplishments. His father was a retired soldier and his brother was in action at the time. At age 6, Javus and his family received word that his brother had been killed in action.
One day, while Javus attending school, a group of outlaws came to the ranch and murdered his parents. He was unaware of the situation until he arrived home. Thanks to his small community, Javus was cared for until he made the decision to join the military like the rest of his family.
For years, Javus trained as a TSA marine. Gaining many honors for his patriotism and ability to perform. Javus had a few on and off relationships with women but one never did stick. He formed tight relationships with his brothers and sisters in the military however. It wasn't that he was a social butterfly but more that he enjoyed the company of other beings around him. More of a listener than a talker. This may also be part to the fact that his conversation skills are less than ideal.
When Javus was 26, he and his team ventured to a space station that had been causing communication disturbances. Unknown to the squad of five, it was all a trap. Javus' squad mates were all killed. Javus made it out barely as the station began to fall apart. When he reported to the TSA, he was approached by a man from Project Olympus who commended him on his bravery and determination. They asked him to become part of their "solution".
He was assigned to Unit: Upsilon. A part of Olympus that majored in chemically enhancing soldiers instead of using cybernetics. His enhancement was basic. It allowed him to advance passed all human abilities. The peak of bodily human perfection, if you will.

2071- Caltech scientists devise a plausible FTL method utilizing the newly-discovered Higgs Boson Field.
2075- Working together with Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter (the Caltech scientists who devised the FTL method), a Romanian scientist named Georgiy Ciurcu comes up with an equation that would allow, using the Higgs Bubble, variations in the sub-space field to be made, which in turn would theoretically make it possible for the bubble to move within sub-space. The equation is named the Ciurcu-equation.
2080- January 1st; Galileo Mission: At 5:00 AM, the first human craft with the capability of traveling at a speed 0.9 times that of light is launched. The craft reaches its' maximum of 0.9 light speed as it passed Mars on its' way to Jupiter where it crashed into the moon Io, attempting as per mission parameters to loop around the planet. None-the-less, it is humanity's greatest achievement since the first manned mission to Mars.
2082- July 9th; Galileo 2 Mission: A second craft is launched at 22:11 PM. The new probe has an upgraded VI capable of faster responses. The Higgs Field Manifold is made to be able to create a denser field that allows the probe to reach Warp 1 and even ride on Warp 1.1 shortly before beginning deceleration.
2082- July 30th; After analyzing data from Galileo 2, a project is started that would involve launches of manned FTL-capable craft. Construction on a crewed craft with the mission to colonize Mars is underway.
2082- August 18th; Galileo 2-TEST-B1: The Galileo 2 craft is refitted to be capable of even higher warp. The VI is upgraded and a cockpit added. The B1 launch is the first FTL launch involving a 'manned' (by a chimp named Yuri) Galileo probe.
2083- January 8th; Construction of the crewed FTL craft is finished, the craft being named The Hawking 1, after Stephen Hawking.
2083- October 6th; The Hawking 1 is set on its' inaugural flight to Mars. The trip takes just over 10 minutes due to the craft's Warp 2 capabilities.
2083- October 8th; Mars Colony is officially established. Its' first wave of volunteer colonists arrive soon after on the 1st of January 2084.
2084- February 4th; Talks between world leaders begin about establishing a unified world government.
2085- April 21st; Galileo 2-TEST-B14: After further upgrades, the Galileo 2 craft, carrying another chimp (named Buzz) manages to reach a warp speed of just over 4.8. Breaking the Warp 5 Barrier becomes a top concern.
2086- January 1st; Only six years after reaching FTL capability, the first crewed vessel of human design is launched on a heading to Proxima Centauri. Not only that, but the vessel (named Hawking 3), is also the first craft capable to break the Wrap 5 Barrier. Theme of the Hawking 3 Launch:

2232- The human world is stirred towards a major conflict as colonies try to secure larger independence and more rights for colonials. A signing of a treaty is planned but never happens due to political tensions on Earth itself, colonies in conflict with each other and terrorist cells.
2233- After much tension, a date for the treaty is established. Many colonies' representatives are assassinated on their way to a star cruiser in a 'classified location', which itself gets bombed by a then-nameless terrorist organisation.
2235- Unable to withstand it any longer, the world spirals into a full-blown conflict as colonies loyal to Earth, mostly central and major ones, clash with those that seek independence- outback settlements and outposts. This incident is named the 'Nexus' Conflict, bearing the name of the bombed star cruiser..
2238- Ban-Anad D'ealari born on New Chicago station.
2244- Colonies seeking Independence from the Terran Systems Alliance form their own coalition- The Free Worlds Coalition. The Coallition quickly grows in members as more and more backwater worlds join in, having suffered enough disregard from the TSA.
2245- "The Centimani" reveal themselves and claim responsibility for the bombing of the Nexus.
2248- During a hostage situation on New Chicago station, Ban-Anad's father gets killed by the Trinity terrorist cell.
2263- Ban-Anad puts forward his first application to join the UNMC (United Nations Marine Corps, Scotts' 'Space Marines'). Accepted second time round. Stationed on Mars Colony as part of the 92-nd Marine Division.
2265- A series of riots, skirmishes and uprisings on Mars Colony and its' moons (mining outposts) leads to the eventual Mars Rebellion, led by a terrorist cell known as "The Centimani". (Picture something like Red Faction)
2266- The Mars Liberation Initiative, headed my "The Centimani" organisation, is formed with valiant support from colonists. A heavy colonial resistance is formed, steadily fighting against military forces on the planet. This is not enough however, as the Mars colonists have no military strength in space.
2267- Supposedly as a last resort to liberation, The Centimani decides to employ a never-before tested matter-relocation bomb that was to supposedly relocate any UN forces on the planet into space. The device backfires however, increasing its' radius to envelop most of Mars Colony, before imploding. No debris in space have yet been found to indicate where the chunk of the colony was sent. The incident was recorded on mass media, causing a huge public uproar on other colonies, even ones fighting against the TSA in the Nexus conflict. The Mars Rebellion is officially ended with the UN officially being victorious, as support for the Centimani falls drastically. However, Mars is granted semi-autonomy and a massive relief effort is started. All research in the field of matter-relocation is immediately banned and any existing materials and documents are completely destroyed. The Mars Colony Memorial Hospital is established, funded by the UN and equipped with the state-of-the-art technology, it is the biggest military hospital created and open for the public.
2270- The initial Project Olympus is put into action. The mining colony on Saturn's moon Titan is privatized by the Project as their main HQ.
2271- Ban-Anad is transferred from his previous assignment to a training position for one of the units, named Delta. Four initial units are formed- Digama, Sampi, Koppa and Delta. Training and augmentation go according to plan, with minimum 'waste' (initiates that could not cope with either implants or training).
2274- Tasu Venkamas is born on Chevron V, an Indonesian colony on the edge of TSA space.
2275- The Rio Incident: With all four Units showing substantial progress, the Pantheon (the people in charge) gives the green light for a first deployment. The four units are sent to Rio, a district on Earth, to prevent a terrorist cell connected to The Centimani from gaining control over the local government. A simple mission, but one that goes out of control in all possible ways. Having previously exhibited mental instabilities (yet always crossed off as 'within expected parameters'), three of the four units show little concern for civilian lives, possibly even recognizing them as enemies, vagrant behavior and other signs of clear mental unfitness to perform in the field. With the event already making the mass media outlets and fast spiraling out of control, an immediate decision is made within the Pantheon to scrap the initial Units, scrub the program and revisit the methods of training. The three units that had gone mental drop off the grid, going completely dark. Their AIs are purged. Being caught in the blast of the incident, dubbed nothing more than 'acceptable collateral', Delta Unit- the only unit to never during training show any signs of mental degradation, is cut off and scrubbed as well. In a dire bid to save its' being, the units' AI- Prometheus, attempts to download itself directly onto the brains of the members of the squad, using their implants as transfer devices. The process drives one member Zando Friz instantly mad, causing him to try and literally 'cut out his brain'. Another member- Oeber Skintt slowly drops into a vegetative state, his nervous system shutting down over the next year. Fortunately, the download is stopped by the destruction of the ship the AI was on and the purge of Prometheus' database on Titan but that still leaves the third member, Karaxt Brinn, suffering from borderline dementia and periodic psychotic breakdowns. Both Oeber and Karaxt are admitted in the mental wing of the Mars Colony Memorial Hospital. Distraught by the event, Ban-Anad leaves the Olympus Project and the military altogether.
2278- Rafael Burk is born on Earth.
2282- The Telkos Incident: Nearing nearly 50 years of war between the TSA and Coalition a new project is undertaken to end the war, codenamed Black Star. James Morak and his team of military scientists and engineers of the TSA activate the slipspace gate on Feldon Prime. The gate is engineered to reverse trajectory it's transportation of energy. Inadvertently the mass converter transports a mass of energy to the Telkos system (Coalition), obliterating over 14 Billion lives. Because the gates were not designed for such massive amounts of energy the gate on Feldon Prim suffers a massive meltdown. A majority of the environment is destroyed on Feldon Prim and Morak and his team are KIA. It is unknown if firing of the gate was intentional or not, or if the effects were known. It is the largest travesty since the Rio incident. Shortly after Coalition begins to disperse. In addition, Javus Peace is born.
2284- The last, dissolving remnants of the Coalition try to fight a lost war against increasing TSA forces. As the last fraction of the FWC fights a scattered, desperate and losing battle on the colony world of Jewel, the leading powers of the Coalition finally decide to surrender, calling for a cease-fire pending peace negotiations. The TSA answers their plea. A time for negotiations is set, the place- an open field between the trenches of the TSA and the FWC. At the last moment however, a TSA cruiser in orbit of the planet launches a nuclear strike at the location, obliterating both TSA and FWC forces. Having no-one to turn to for leadership and no military force left, the FWC capitulates, giving in to any terms the TSA enforces. Although seemingly the only party benefiting from the nuclear strike, the TSA denies involvement, stating that the ship that launched the attack was acting on its'own and not as part of the larger TSA military. So far, any evidence of the otherwise is absent.
2285- Martial Law is enforced on most colonies with former Coalition involvement.
2295- Rafael becomes part of the Sleight of Hand's crew. Ban-Anad becomes a dominant figure in his life and a surrogate parent of sorts.
2302- At the age of 24, Rafael is approached by the Olympus Project. He is eager to answer and reluctant to listen to Ban's fears of the program turning into another military fiasco. The two drop out, leading to Rafael leaving the Sleight of Hand crew. At the same time, Tasu Venkamas is also recruited from his field agent position in the TSA military.

Ok, I've been making this up for most of today, building on what I know of the Higgs boson (which isn't a lot). I pulled most of the theoretical stuff out of my ass, but the calculations are correct... I'm gonna get into the TSA and UNE some other time (say this weekend)...

With advances in technology and the human understanding of physics, in the late middle of the 21st century scientists at CERN finally managed to accomplish what they had set out to do. With the dawn of the 22nd century closing-in, work was at last finalized and it was announced to the public that solid evidence for the Higgs Field was present. Later that same year, scientists at CERN found a way to directly 'look' at the so-called 'Higgs Boson'. A huge leap for physics and science as a whole, the practical effects and benefits of this new-found knowledge were vast. Soon-after, several upstart research departments, one of which the California Institute of Technology, started fantasizing about the possible uses of the Higgs Field. Caltech was the first to make some significant progress in utilizing the field by successfully slowing down a particle traveling at near-light speed. The question from that point on was- could the opposite be accomplished? With the off-shot question of how about accelerating particles to faster-than-light speeds?
True enough, several years of research, experiments and breakthroughs in computing technology later, in 2071, two scientists at Caltech (which now held official funding by NASA, ESA (European Space Agency) and the CNSA (China National Space Administration))- Sheldon Cooper (B.S., M.S., M.A., Ph.D. and Sc.D) and Leonard Hofstadter (Ph. D), found it possible to accelerate a particle to a speed nearly equal that of light. The theory behind the breakthrough is to first create a 'bubble' of Higgs bosons around the particle, then by modifying and adjusting the bubble, create a distortion between the particles' atomic substance (its' mass) within the bubble and that of the space around the bubble, effectively lowering the particle's mass from a perspective outside the bubble. The 'true' mass of the particle within the bubble would remain unchanged. The resulting effect would essentially put the bubble in a sub-space field. This would allow the particle, which would 'ride' inside the bubble, to then be accelerated to theoretically any speed and, so long as the bubble is maintained, that speed would not degenerate and the particle would never slow down (so long it's in a vacuum; and unless it hits something of greater mass).
The question that remained was how to accelerate the bubble and the particle in it? Working together with Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter, in 2075, a Romanian scientist named Georgiy Ciurcu came up with an equation that would allow, using the Higgs Bubble, variations in the sub-space field to be made, which in turn would theoretically make it possible for the bubble to move within sub-space. The equation was named the Ciurcu-equation.
The trick of this process is that the greater the acceleration and speed, the harder it is to maintain the bubble and destabilization of the bubble without first slowing down and returning it to its' original mass would result in the splitting of the particle.
Regardless the risks of the approach, the world was eager at its' first look at plausible Faster-Than-Light travel. Buckling under mass media pressure, Caltech engineers planned the design for the first unmanned vessel to travel at a speed close to 0.9 times that of light. The vessel's programmed mission was to initiate a Higgs Bubble after its' launch from the NASA Lunar Base and break-away from the Earths' gravitational field, accelerate and gradually achieve 0.9 light speed. It was then to loop around Jupiter using the planet's gravitational field as a slingshot, and head back to Earth, gradually slowing down as it passed Mars.
To accommodate for the calculations and changes-per-second needed to be made in order to maintain a Higgs Bubble large enough to envelop and move the vessel through sub-space, the worlds' first completely autonomous VI was designed. The name of both the vessel and its' VI was to be Galileo.
It took another year and a half to build and prepare for humanity's first attempt at achieving near-light speed, and on September 1st 2079, the Galileo was finally transported to Lunar Base, the launch-date being planned as early morning, January 1st 2080.
True enough, at 5:00 AM on the 1st of January 2080, the Galileo probe was launched from Lunar Base on its' course to Neptune and back. The vessel initialized a successful Bubble just after it made it through Earth's gravity field on its ion thrusters. It achieved 0.9 light speed as it passed by Mars at around 6:00 AM. The world rejoiced and nation leaders began a combined public address from Iceland on the effects this would have for humanity. The possible creation of a united Earth government was brought up by several media representatives. The festivities were short-lived however, as the probe reached Jupiter, in its' attempt to get close enough in order to slingshot using the planets' gravity field, it crashed into Io during its' loop, destroying the moon entirely.
Undeterred by this shortcoming, and encouraged by the fact that Galileo had reached 0.9 times the speed of light, Caltech designed a second probe- Galileo 2, which was designed to attempt to first achieve light speed and then, if successful, go over it as much as it calculated possible. To accomplish this, the Higgs Field Manifold was made to be capable of creating a denser bubble closer to the probe, which would allow it to reach greater speeds. The Galileo VI was also upgraded to be capable of the required accuracy in its' calculations. The changes took two more years of research and preparation, but in May 2082 Galileo 2 was transported to Lunar Base with a launch-date set as the 9th of July the same year. The mission of the new probe was to be the same as the original Galileo.
Galileo 2 was launched on July 9th 2082 at 22:11 PM from Lunar Base, the launch made mostly visible from North America due to the full moon.
The mission was a staggering success with 'warp 1' (the term for a speed equal to that of light, coined by scientists working on the project in homage to Star Trek, a 20th century television series depicting space exploration) being reached by the Galileo 2 probe 1 AU before its' slingshot off Jupiter. The vessel made the return flight successfully, shortly riding on a warp 1.1 before passing Mars on its' way back and disengaging the Higgs bubble just as it entered back into Earth's gravitational field.
The following two years saw several more tests of the FTL method, utilizing refits of the Galileo 2 probe with each new attempt pushing the warp barrier a little further by intensifying the Higgs field around the craft, before finally stopping at just short of warp 5 (the maximum achieved by a Galileo probe being warp 4.8) in 2085.
Work on a crewed craft was started as soon as the data from the Galileo 2 test was analyzed, the proposed mission being the large-scale colonization of Mars (which at the time had only a small, seldom-visited, outpost). The project was finalized in early 2083 with the construction of The Hawking 1, in homage to Stephen Hawking, [name up for discussion]. The craft was set on its' inaugural flight to Mars from an orbit over Earth (having been built on the moon and assembled in space) on the 6th of October 2083. Capable of warp 2, the craft reached its' destination in little over 10 minutes. Mars Colony was soon established and The Hawking 1 was making monthly voyages to-and-fro from January 2084.
The following years were dedicated to breaking the Warp 5 Barrier, as it was called by scientists working on the project. Some argued that it was the 'natural stopping point'- one could only bend the laws of physics so far. Others suggested further distorting the mass of the travelling object, but none of them could answer how. It was possible, in theory and solely on paper, to create another Bubble outside the one already initiated. Theoretically, the result would be the further distortion of the mass of the travelling object, but at the cost of Higgs Field stability. The two fields (each created by one of the bubbles) would have to be in perfect synchrony or else they would both collapse on the craft- destroying it (and, some theorized, creating a whole in space).
This theory was finally put to the test on the eve of 2086 with the completion and launch of The Hawking 3 [name up for discussion], a manned vessel capable of breaking warp 5 by overlaying another Higgs Bubble over the initial one, and making it past the border of the Solar System on a heading towards Proxima Centauri. A journey of 4.22 light-years taking a little over 10 months.
