I Just Got my FIRST Hate Mail

So this guy is not even my friend. He's a friend of a friend of a friend that I sometimes see at parties. He's an actor who doesn't get many roles and he's never written a script or tried to film his own thing in his life.

Here's what he write (hormonous me takes offense yet somehow there's pride in getting your first hate mail lol)

"I am sorry Celinka... I respect you as a person 100% .. But as an actress, you are not a natural and have no skills. I As a director, your videos look filmed with a webcam and badly edited. Your stuff does'nt look professionnal at all. You keep posting stuff on facebook pages and no one ever replies. Your projet of IT call center is horrible... No offense intended ... I feel you might be good with marketing, but please, i got some comments from people... Stop it!

I am veeeeryyy sorry of saying that to you as I very much like you .. But I feel you might not focus on what you are good at .. everyone has theirs own strenght

I respect your blogs I read them. You got the marketing aspect very well. In terms of doing it .. no .... You knowww business I would advice you to focus on that more as you rock on it! Focus on your strenghts

It was rude, but he wasn't insulting you. He was just giving criticism, and TBH most of his points seemed pretty valid (maybe a bit too strong, though).

He didn't call you a faggot or the nig word so it's not hate mail.

Well, what if the guy is actually an asshole and is just giving this criticism to get bonus Asshole XP?

Now, when a people is giving criticism, you'll note wheter or not the person is an arse or not.

Heck, if you met her in person and know what her nature is like, it can give you a heads up when she gives you criticism; I've met this kind of person (a friend of mine in fact), which was just like that.

You know when a person tries to help you when she goes a bit calm like "Yeah, man...Listen as much as your trying to do this sort of thing, I see you're not fufilling your goal, let me help you by saying how to correct these mistakes, first you do...", not like this guy which acts like the guy from Kitchen Hell saying "Your series sucks so much that even Ed Woods thinks it's horrible"

Most people who know the guy to whom I told about the hate mail, told me not to take him seriously, that he's a jackass.

I was part of a film race this weekend and I met a bunch of people I'd never met before. Gave them a bunch of business card. The slinky was very much complimented. And some people came up ot me and said "Oh so youR'e Celinka, I saw (said video)" they complimented and gave feedback. Polite tones, mostly technical feedback really.

I wrote a screenplay in 2 hours. And everyone on the team told me that they loved it and felt it conveyed our ideas beautifully and stuff.

It's a question of how you present criticism I suppose. The guy in the hate mail was being aggressive about it and I don't take kindly to bullying. I'm not going to stop posting vids just because HE doesn't like them. Programmers like the compiling shit. You guys enjoyed the Bioware parody which was totally not made in a professional context.

Honestly, my professional stuff isn't viewed on youtube. My feature is being submitted but I only recently completed it and the fantasy web series is in pre. And will have full budget to hire full crew.

And think what the guy should have specified was "It's not Hollywood so I don't liek it" because he's trying to get into Hollywood. I AM NOT. I'm indie film. Self funded mostly. It's a different looks, different aspect ratio and all that stuff. I met some festival people tonight. One of which, in HER festival it's only shorts, but from what she saw of me so far, she wants to give referrals to festivals for features she knows so I can have better chances of getting in. Because she likes my stuff.

So it's a different crowd. Different audience.

Most my things are semi-pro or less than that, just for fun. The pro stuff, I gather money for it, hence the long time till completion and the not viewable online yet thing. Being smart means knowing when to do with $0 and when to get the $$.

I think my main thing is for PRO, getting someone who can shoot night and who has a good HD cam. And better audio equipment.

And when I'm acting for REAL, you guys will know. Pretending to be Shepard is hardly acting haha

He really didn't like that video, nor my advert about demos. Meh!

Indiependent world runs differently. I just need more budget to up the technicals some more. You guys agree?

And frankly, I'm not sure if I agree completely, but some of his points are valid. He doesn't sound like a great critic and maybe not the best judge of what is happening. I feel he probably is a bit more conservative about expanding himself into other fields and might not have a great grasp on everything. On the valid side though, purely in viewcount, comments, and likes your show isn't doing great right now. You are under 100 views on many of them still with even more popular episodes falling a bit short in displayed interest through likes and comments. The logo's white background flashing across a blackscreen would get me hell from my editing teacher. I would either change that to a totally white screen or more likely create a file without the background and make the text on it a separate white that doesn't move. The comedy is on again and then off the next. In my opinion, the referential humor is a bit inaccessible and I would focus more on the personality gags, but without a wider reference base than myself I can't really say for certain what resonates. I would probably shoot for slightly longer episodes for better pacing and more pauses to absorb.

If you don't have a dedicated editor, I can do it at about 13 to 15 USD an hour. I can do one free test edit on an episode (Perhaps one you already released) and see if you are pleased with how I manage things.

Hey, I agree about the funny. The programming industry likes this stuff but since it's a niche market, it's hard to get it out there to the right audience. It's not an audience I'm familiar with.

It is Frank's web series. I co produce it yes, but I don't consider it mine. MY web series will need 85 thousand CAD so... lawl nah, in Season 2 I put my foot down a bit. I told the guys we needed to expand a bit. I let them ahve their random thigns and put in some of my own, but we worked more on story and character development.

I'm also not going to worry about timing. In the sense, I edited so fast that the final edit is like a rough cut. I'm going to try to make things a bit tighter. Comedy is edited very differently from drama film or fantasy film. First time doing many comedic episodes, other than my parodies that are sort wtv, jsut for fun anyway type of thing.

So since day 1 of Season 2 we've all had a different approach. And we tried to have more general jokes too. But I'm not a comedy write although I'm a good screenplay writer, and I realise that this is probably the last Season for Compiling. Season 2 has a bit more suspense, and yes still comedy but I tried to put in more elements I'm a good writer for.

I'm more a fantasy writer and drama/film noir when it suits me. So the next series is really ME. My strong points.

I tend to agree with you Mort about the logo. We're trying to find someone who's good with Illustrator and Photoshop to come up with a moe colourful logo, like pool noodles criss crossing in a clash or something of the genre. With a coloured background. I also intend on making teh beginning more clipped. So, brief logo, no movement (I agree) and right away episode starts after title. Ending credits faster too. No scrolling. Like I said comedy is very different from hat I'm used to and the creator of the series is not a filmmaker lol

You can read my other block of comments to understand more about the guy who "hate mailed" me. I call it that because it's aggressive.

Keep the feedback coming. It's very much in alignment with what I'm thinking these days. We seem to be vibrating at a similar frequency (esoteric stuff) but yeah. Let me know if you know people, or yourself, who can design a new logo for us. The cartoon Frank is cute, but doesn't cut it anymore and Frank wants a new logo too, so...

Oh, where would you say some fo teh episodes dragged too much in terms of editing, that I could have clipped beetter? (I have an idea myself, but I want to hear some of what you think too, always help for improvement and I ahve'T begun editing Season 2 yet, so still time to get the feedback in for me to keep in mind when editing this time).
